Instrument Proficiency Check (IPC)

IPC Training stands for Instrument Proficiency Check training. It's a type of recurrent training required by the FAA for pilots who want to maintain or regain instrument flying privileges under IFR (Instrument Flight Rules).

When is IPC Training Required?

An IPC is required when a pilot:

  • Has not met instrument currency requirements in the last 6 months, and

  • Has gone more than 12 calendar months without performing the required approaches, holding, and course tracking under IFR.

What Does IPC Training Include?

An IPC must be conducted by:

  • A CFII (Certified Flight Instructor - Instrument)

The IPC includes:

  • At least one precision approach (like ILS),

  • One non-precision approach (like VOR or RNAV),

  • A holding procedure,

  • Intercepting and tracking navigational courses,

  • Unusual attitude recoveries

  • Missed approaches and partial panel work.
